Beware of operator's promotional gifts

When you've been with your phone and fibre provider for some time, you might receive emails or calls from them, offering promotions and even free gifts like smartphones, smart TVs, headphones or e-book readers.

But is it really a freebie?

But is it really a freebie?

No, often these 'gifts' come with a catch. The company is trying to keep you as a long-term customer to avoid you switching to a competitor or downgrading your tariff. So, accepting a freebie implies committing to a longer contract.

It's important to consider the terms carefully. A seemingly good deal might not be as beneficial as it appears. For instance, if you accept a free AirPods 4 set, but commit to a 24-month contract, you'll need to pay the full tariff for two years, even if you only value the AirPods at around €120. And if you cancel before the contract ends, you might end up paying more than the AirPods' current market price.

Ultimately, be cautious of promotional gifts. If you have a good tariff, and you're sure you won't be leaving soon, the offer might be worth considering. But if you're paying a high rate, or you're unsure about your future plans, it's best to decline and shop around for a better deal instead.
